Letter From Your President

We had a great turnout for the SWE-CA Executive Council Planning Session. Thanks to Lulu Copeland for arranging the location for us - the Wacker Institute Resource Room at Chattanooga State was a great room for our meeting!

We have set a goal to increase our membership by 20% or 50 members. We will be working hard this year to achieve our membership goal. 

We have three activities planned for August: On August 1, we have a joint meeting with CEC and green spaces to discuss the Tiny House Building Project at Chattanooga State.  On August 6, we have a rafting trip planned on the Ocoee River.  We will have lunch together after the rafting trip!  This will be an exciting event!  On August 28, we have our Region D Leadership Summit conference call.

We currently have two activities planned for September: On September 19, we have a joint meeting with CEC at 12:00 noon. Carlene Vital, Director of Mom Source will be the speaker.  The presentation will be the Generation of the Flexible Worker - How to Manage a Flexible or Remote Workforce in a Virtual World.  The meeting will be held at The Chattanoogan at 1201 Broad St.  On September 27, we have a professional development session scheduled at 6:00 pm at Abuelo's Restaurant at Hamilton Place.  The speaker will be Kellye Phillips with Raymond James Financial, and the topic will be Financial Planning for Women.

October is Manufacturing month - and Lulu Copeland is working on scheduling several manufacturing plant tours during the month.  We will communicate the tour plans as soon as the manufacturing facilities finalize the schedule.

We also have a social event planned for Friday, October 21 at 7:00 pm - a game night and bonfire at Jillian Murphy's home.  This will be alot of fun - we hope that everyone can attend!

The SWE Annual Conference is planned for October 27 - 29 and will be held in Philadelphia, PA this year.  If you plan to attend, book your hotel early because the rooms fill up fast.  

SAVE THE DATE !!!  We have already scheduled our signature event this year - our 6th annual SWE Wine Event!  Come join us for an evening of wine tasting, heavy hors d' oeuvres, and a silent auction.  This year we will have custom SWE wine glasses for sale!  The Wine Event is scheduled for Friday, December 2 from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm at green l spaces at 63 East Main St. Tickets are $30 per person and $50 per couple.  Your donations will fund engineering scholarships for women at UTC and Chattanooga State.  You can RSVP to Christy Snyder at christy.snyder77@gmail.com or to a member of SWE Chattanooga.

Our Region D Conference is scheduled for March 9 - 11, 2017 at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia.  This will be our last Region D Conference so we hope that everyone can attend!  The Region Conferences will be replaced with WE Local Conferences.  There will be 2 to 3 WE Local Conferences per year; next year the WE Local Conference locations will be Pittsburgh and San Jose.  Since Atlanta is so close to us and this will be our last Region D Conference - let's all plan to attend together!  The banquet scheduled for Saturday night (March 11) will be held at the Georgia Aquarium - this event will be alot of fun!  We hope to see everyone there!

E-Week Events

​Friday, February 17, 2017 -  Premier of the IMAX Movie “Dream Big – Engineering Our World” at the Tennessee Aquarium IMAX Theater.  SWE will be involved with an outreach event coordinated with this movie in the near future.  We are awaiting input from IMAX marketing department – more details coming soon.
Monday, February 20, 2017 – E-Week Kickoff Luncheon, 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, The Chattanoogan Hotel.
Wednesday, February 22, 2017 – E-Week Dinner Banquet, 6:00 pm, The Doubletree Hotel
Thursday, February, 23, 2017 – Introduce a Girl to Engineering Event at Chattanooga State Community College.
Saturday, March 4, 2017 - STEM the Tide at the Chattanooga Public Library, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

SWE Members Win Awards at E-Week Banquet !

Two of our SWE Members won awards at the E-Week Banquet held on February 22, 2017.  Doreen Howard won The Engineering Technician of the Year Award and Heidi Weisenberger won the People-To-People Award.
